1971 年 10 月
紐約郵報（New York Post）的一個專欄作家（Pete Hamill）寫了一篇故事 － 回家（Going Home）
故事中，描述一些大學學生在一次巴士旅程中認識了一位剛出獄的前受刑人
在車上盯著窗外 盼著看見一條綁在路邊橡樹上的黃手帕
九個月之後（1972 年 6 月） 讀者文摘再度刊登了〝回家〞這篇文章
同時 ABC-TV 以這個故事為主題製作了一部影片（James Earl Jones 飾演男主角／前受刑人）
一個半月後 Irwin Levine 和 L. Russell Brown 宣稱他們在軍中聽到了這個故事
以它為主題 創作了〝老橡樹上的黃絲帶〞這首歌 並註冊了該歌的著作權
當時 Pete Hamill 跟這兩位仁兄還起了著作權糾紛呢 :p
1973 年 三星期之內 Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree 創下賣出三百萬張的紀錄
根據 BMI 當時的計算 電台播放這首歌的次數是三百萬次
